While working 3rd Shift for the information line for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on his way to work at 2 am, Mr. Redkey's car was t-boned by a commercial tow truck at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Bell Rd. in Phoenix.
The pictures below will illuminate why Mr. Redkey suffered these significant injuries:
Multiple right rib fractures,
A left frontal lobe hemorrhagic contusion,
A subarachnoid hemorrhage,
A diffuse axonal injury with a deep white matter sheer injuries in the corpus callosum,
respiratory failure,
lacerated liver,
a precardial effusion,
and a MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infection.
At the time, the treatment for the hemorrhages were the clipping or coiling method. Both methods would follow-up procedures. However, because Mr. Redkey was on the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), the doctors at John C. Lincoln Medical Center (now HonorHealth) at 250 E. Dunlap Ave. decided to wait and see.
He received a PEG tube because they were not sure if he would ever wake up...
The hemorrhages self-resolved, and Mr. Redkey was taken off anesthesia Feb. 14th, 2007, and he first woke up on Feb. 21st.
His mother (now deceased, died September 5th, 2011) was at his bed side.
Her first words to him when he opened his eyes, like he was taking a long nap, was "you were in an accident..."
His first words were "whose fault was it?" (because it would have been horrible for him to wake up and learn that he had hurt an innocent person).
He was transferred to Vocational Rehabilitation at the Maricopa County Medical Center (now Valleywise Health Center) at 2601 E. Roosevelt St. in Phoenix where he received rehabilitation treatment and was discharged on March 8, 2007.
